6th week journal

During Tomb Sweeping Day (a holiday here in china), Nizam, Haikal and I, went to go and see pandas. The place is quiet far away. It was raining and i decided to buy an umbrella just for a mere 10 RMB which Shawn still says i got conned. Hahah so yeah the pandas were cute. Took a lot of pictures and videos. After we got back to the campus, all of our time was concentrated on studying APPG. I don’t want to go back Singapore and still need to take APPG as that would be a waste of time. But the day wasn’t totally a studying one as at night we still had the time to play one game of dota.

The next day was APPG theory test 2. I had my doubts over topic 6 and 7 but topic 1 to 5 seemed okay so i am sure i can pass the test. Let’s just hope the lecturers are lenient enough. After the test, we had a field trip to a singtel company here in Chengdu. The CEO is a Singaporean! Apparently he had been out of Singapore for 7 years already. Woa i can tahan for 6 weeks but 7 years?! No way. We got to tour around the company for an hour and after that went back to campus.

Thursday was fast approaching. It was our IS presentation. I worked on it all day during Wednesday even skipping dinner to finish our presentation while polishing it up with videos. I did three out of the four videos presented. I will upload the videos on facebook after I’m back in Singapore.

The day of the presentation. My group was the fourth to present. There were a lot of groups though. So after we presented, confirm got extra time to play games on laptop. Haha. I thought my group presentation was entertaining and funny although it lacked content but it was ok. I was satisfied. I was amazed with Daniel’s group presentation as their content was strong and their videos were funny especially the part where they were blowing out gas due to the cold weather.

The next day which was Friday proved to be a memorable but sad day for us who played soccer with the Uyghur. It was the last match with them. I scored another hat trick to make it 22 goals for 6 weeks. I forgot how many matches we played. But overall not bad for someone fat. Hahahaha so after the match we took pictures and hugged the uyghurs as they have given us this friendship. If they weren’t there for us, i believe my six weeks here will be dull. Thanks Uyghur

Hudabade, Aziz, Xaparang, Hoji, Mohammed Aziz, Khair, Anwar and the rest of the Uyghur. Thank you all.

5th week

Back from Jiu Zhai Gou, we were exhausted and hungry. After putting our bags down in the dormitory, we headed to the restaurant and order our favourite food! Never had food tasted so good especially if you didn’t eat something nice for 3 days.

It was APPG for 2 whole days.. so sian. Don’t even talk about the IS lecture. Even more boring

The weekend my group went to the electronics place, their so called ‘Sim Lim’ with Mr teo and his wife. It was an hour journey from the new UESTC campus to the old campus. Lucky i brought with me my new earpiece to blast music out loud. After arriving we need to walk some more to hire a taxi. After arriving at the first tower, we predicted that there are going be a lot of pirated stuff selling here. Well its china right. Fuad, Nizam and me only bought games which didn’t work or there were a few errors in installing the games.

We exited the first tower within an hour because time is running out. While we were walking to the second tower, there was a man trying to sell CDs to Mr Teo. Once Mr Teo saw what it was, he laughed and moved on. Me, curious as ever, went to see what he was selling. Turns out it was porn! haha then the group laughed and move on.

The only memorable incident in the second tower was this hot woman trying to con me. Here’s how the story goes.

As usual, my eyes are wandering around, looking at women if i had the chance. Then suddenly my eyes spotted one sweet, cute lady tending to her store. I pretended to be a customer and saw that she was selling a lot of CDs. I took a look but i didn’t touch any of her CDs. After that i walked off and sat down on a sofa with Nizam and Haikal while playing Wii tennis. Out of a sudden the woman earlier approached me and spoke to me in Chinese. I was confused but Bei Jia translated the words for me and told me that i stole her CDs and I needed to pay her the money. I was like ‘what the heck? You lucky you pretty. If not...’ then Mrs Teo came to my rescue and told her off. Come on I’m an innocent angel with a bright halo on top of me.

After that we went back straight to the old campus and then back to the new campus. Had dinner with the group and back to our dorms.

4th week journal

Another 2 weeks till home sweet home. I didn’t think i could survive 4 weeks in another country without my parents but I guess determination and money prove me wrong. Hahahah. If 6 weeks no problem at here, national service will be a breeze. I actually aimed to shed some kilos over these few weeks but I feel that I kind of gain more weight because I’m eating too much here! To tell you the truth, the food here is delicious especially the ones cooked at this halal restaurant in the campus. The dishes I always order are ‘Neuro Ban Mian’ and ‘Neuro Chow Fan’. All this food talk is making me hungry already. Hahah

On Monday the 22nd of March, I turned 18. Thanks for all the wishes. At facebook alone there were over 100s of them. Thank you all.

The first major thing that happened in week 4 was our APPG Lab Test. Although I felt I was prepared for it, I blanked out in the room. I saw a few people asking for help from other fellow students secretly but I didn’t want to as i want my conscious to be clear. Besides if I fail means I can learn from it. You can’t from cheating. As soon as I received my paper, i started doing but heck my mind was so blank I begin to cock up. I forgot my ‘messagebox’ got inverted commas and my ‘.ToString’. Now I’m just hoping I can study harder for Theory Test 2 so it can pull up my grade for APPG.

Sunday came. It was our trip to Jiu Zhai Gou. I must say this one of the most beautiful places on Earth and this place will surely be a good mention in one of those ‘100 places to go before I die’ articles.

My dormitory mates didn’t sleep the whole night for fear we would not wake up in time for our flight. The flight was at 7am. The bus from our campus leaves at 5. So yeah played DOTA all the way. It was tiring to wait till 5am. In the bus we managed to catch a nap as the airport was just a 45 minute ride away. Once we reached the airport, we got our flight tickets. My seat was 1D. I got a happy feeling at that time about my seat but I wasn’t quite sure what it was. So Mr Teo settled some things blah blah blah. Once on the aeroplane, i finally knew what that feeling is. The feeling of FIRST CLASS SEAT. Hahah. The flight will be about 1 hour from here to Jiu Zhai Gou. Caught some sleep but a sudden change of temperature and altitude woke me up. My ears were hurting and I was shivering. Upon arrival, the air stewardess announced, “We have arrived at Jiu Zhai Gou, 2500 metres above sea level and the temperature is -2 degrees Celsius”.

I thought i was a hero wearing 3 layer of clothes only haha. I was wrong. I took out another sweater. Put in on and it was still bloody cold. Outside the airport I could see fragments of ice on windows but there weren’t any snow.. YET. I asked Mr Tan how far our hotel was from the airport. He said we were going to take some detours along the way before going to the hotel. It was 2 hours to this waterfall place. On the way to there, I seriously had some bladder problem. 30 minutes to the journey, I already had the urge to pee but it wasn’t until 20 minutes later till the next toilet break. So I quickly dashed to the toilet and pee till I was satisfied. I got back to the bus and i had the urge to pee again! Wahlaowei. Fast forward to the waterfall place. This is the first place i experienced snow in china. There were only small currents flowing down in the lower part of this place. We needed to climb to the top to get to see a spectacular waterfall. And what a sight to behold! The waterfall was beautiful. This is just the beginning. Tomorrow would be a beautiful day and changed my life forever.

In the hotel, I was paired up with Amin to share a room to spend 2 nights. I was too lethargic to unpack so i just threw myself on the bed and fell asleep. Can’t blame me I’ve had a lack of sleep. Haha the next morning my feet felt so cold. I open the windows and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Snow covered the place, mountains and trees in white. No wonder so cold. I wore 5 layers to Jiu Zhai Gou’s nature park which is the main event for the 4th week.

Upon reaching the nature park we were required to take a bus to Virgin Forest, which was located in the Rize Valley, and then go back down to where we came. Jiu Zhai Gou is composed of three valleys arranged in a Y shape. The bus was packed and now I know how sardines felt when they are in a tin. Hahah. Reached halfway and the bus asked us to alight as the season has just past winter, it was too dangerous to go any further. Right now my group were at Panda Lake. Kept trying to find panda waterfalls but failed. Panda Lake was cool but it wasn’t any significant. Took some pictures here and there. Went to pearl shoals and found pearl waterfall. To me this is the most amazing sight to ever see other than hot women. The Pearl Shoal waterfall somehow creates this mist that creates this amazing effect which I can’t really describe here. You have to be there to see it for yourself. Now I know why this waterfall is world famous. Too bad I didn’t have a camera.

Our next destination was the tourist centre where we could take a bus to Long Lake which is located in the Zechawa valley. The bus ride was longer because it climbs to a higher altitude. Once reached, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The lake was literally frozen solid! Me acting as a child went lower to see a clearer view of the frozen lake. What an awesome sight. I turned to my right and there were people crossing over the authorised line, taking pictures on the big pile of rocks. Wanting some cheap thrills, my group mates climbed over the authorised line getting nearer to the frozen lake. I swear while walking i almost lost my footing because what we were walking on was big rocks. Once we were literally near the frozen lake, we threw rocks to try to break up the frozen lake. I threw mine and the rock literally bounced off the ice top. Nizam threw a big rock. It did break the ice but the water turned to ice back just moments after it broke! I looked back and we were very far off from the authorised line. An achievement indeed. Haha after a while, there was a security guard who ordered us to go back up. Because we were scared that he might shoot us, we went back up reluctantly. Overall, the long lake was the best place in jiu zhai gou. After we got back up, we met up with Qi Long’s gang and headed straight to the entrance place without exploring Shuzheng Valley. That was our biggest regret. Not having time to explore the whole place entirely.

Went back to the hotel to have a quick shower and dinner. After that the OIP group went to see a Tibet Concert which to me was quite ok due to the fact there was a lot of beautiful girls dancing.
The next day we had to wake up early for our flight back to Chengdu. The best damn thing during the journey was that it was covered in snow. After reaching the airport we had time to take pictures with snow but i didnt get to do my snow angel.....
So that’s it for week 4. Stay tuned for week 5.

3rd week journal

What’s up! 3rd week was not really exciting as we only went to the city on Saturday and playing soccer every other weekday. Nevertheless, I must still write this journal if not I won’t get marks for IS. Haha

The big issue about week three was our APPG theory test. I hoped to score at least 70 something for this test because I had studied hard and paid attention to Mr Ma’s lecture class. (Well almost...). And I really thought the test was quite easy. The next day the results were out. I got 62. It was quite disappointing. But at least didn’t fail or else need to take retest which is just a waste of time in my opinion.

The weather in Chengdu has gotten better now. The sun is out. There is no breeze but warmth that is reaching to our dormitory and our hearts. Hahaha every day after lessons, my group will go and play soccer.

Amin - commands players to move. Great at both feet.

Nizam - long legs but always fail to tackle the ball from opponent. Exaggerates his skills that can make him lose possession of the ball. Can run fast though

Haikal - great at tackling people 1 on 1. His reaction is too slow after tackling because he wants to adjust his spectacles

Me - Great finisher. Striker! Woohoo hahah. Though I’m a bit slow at times.

Zahrul - SAFFC captain. Can pass the ball wall. Exaggerates his skills. I know this out of point but he always steals my dorm’s food

Juventus - good at crossing

Andy - tyco kia. Dribbles in a funny way

Qi Long - times the ball well to tackle opponent

Fuad – Speed demon. haha

Fariz - our very own goalkeeper. Hahah his face always got hit by the ball.

Thats our OIP soccer team! Hahah

Other than those activities, there were 2 cultural activities lined up for that week. The first was this negotiation thing that we had to do in the evening. It was mediocre though mainly I couldn’t speak in Chinese to debate with the other party. I wanted to help my team so bad. I guess this is why learning Chinese is important.

But my group mates were those with never say die attitude. Jia Hao and one other guy whom I forgot the name. We debated until we got what we want and in the end we received the 3rd prize. Not bad huh?

The second cultural activity was on the weekend after the city tour. Only Nizam and I went. Haikal and Amin were too lazy to meet the new Chinese students. Haha i admit I only came because I wanted to fly kites with the beautiful girls. We both headed to the place and found out that we need to draw our own design on our kite. This one cute girl volunteered to help us and I ended up drawing her face on our kite. Hahaha. After playing with the paint, we set off to fly our kite. It was a hell lot of fun.
